Internal Medicine Residency Program
Our residency trains internists in the promotion of health, prevention of disease, and management of a broad range of illnesses.
As a new program, the Virtua Internal Medicine Residency has the backing of a remarkably successful health care system in Virtua and the benefit of Rowan University’s growing medical academic programs. This academic alliance enables us to build a robust academic program that includes skills development and simulation.
About Our Internal Medicine Residency Program
Our Internal Medicine residency is centered at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital (VOLOL) in Camden, N.J., and offers valuable educational opportunities at various Virtua inpatient and outpatient sites over the three-year training period.
For nearly four decades, Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital has been actively involved in educating resident physicians and students. Initially sponsored by Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and later by a consortium of Rowan University SOM/Jefferson Health NJ/Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes, the hospital's attending physicians and staff have gained extensive expertise in supporting and guiding medical residents. Furthermore, Virtua Health has proudly served as a stand-alone ACGME (American College of Graduate Medical Education) sponsoring institution for nearly 25 years.
In the Virtua Internal Medicine Residency Program, we are committed to achieving exceptional outcomes:
- To develop outstanding skills across the broad spectrum of Internal Medicine to promote health, prevent disease, and manage the wide spectrum of illnesses inherent to Internal Medicine.
- To provide residents with extensive experiences and in-depth training across ambulatory and inpatient settings and within diverse populations.
- To learn to tailor management in a patient-centric manner, based on acuity as well as a patient's values and beliefs.
- To help residents to develop skills in critical thinking, interpersonal communications, teaching, research, information systems, practice management, professionalism, and lifelong learning.
- To expand the knowledge base in Internal Medicine through scientific inquiry.
- To prepare residents to practice within diverse communities and health care delivery systems.
- Prepare residents for a wide variety of career options.
- To promote wellness within our residents and our educational communities and to ensure residents' satisfaction with their experiences in the program.
