Our Approach to Emergency Medical Services
When an emergency happens, you want a team of skilled, trained, and certified professionals who can provide lifesaving care the second they arrive on the scene. With Virtua, that's exactly what you can expect.
Featuring a team of full- and part-time paramedics, a fleet of mobile intensive care units, and our agile paramedic bike team (for community events), you're in great hands.
Here's how we serve South Jersey:
- Always ready: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, our team is prepared when an emergency occurs. If you or a loved one are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, dial 911 immediately.
- A team approach: Our emergency specialists work alongside members of your local rescue squad to make sure you arrive at the hospital in as stable a condition as possible. Typically, paramedics arrive on the scene in a mobile intensive care unit (MICU) that will follow your ambulance to the hospital while another paramedic joins you in your ambulance.
- Pre-Hospital ECG: The time between the start of a heart attack and treatment is critical to saving lives and preventing heart damage. That’s why Virtua works with local emergency medical service squads and paramedics to provide electrocardiogram (ECG) information from the site of a call or during transport to the ER. With information on your heart’s function in hand, our emergency department team is ready to begin treatment the moment you arrive, including activating the cardiac catheterization team. Thanks to this technology, we have continued to decrease the “door-to-treatment” time for patients with cardiac emergencies.
- Innovative technology: Virtua's EMS team uses innovative lifesaving technology that provides predictive analytics to identify and assign the fastest EMS resource using actual location and actual recommended route between a real-time Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and the incident.
Our Emergency Medical Services Programs
Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICU)
If you find yourself in a potentially life-threatening emergency situation, Virtua's Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICUs) are ready to respond to your immediate needs.
Virtua paramedics who staff these units will assess your situation, begin any necessary treatments to help stabilize your condition, and inform the emergency staff at the hospital of your impending arrival. It's this kind of exceptional teamwork that ensures you arrive at the hospital safely and experience a seamless level of quality care.
Medical Transportation
At Virtua, we're here to get you there. In fact, we provide seamless transportation between all of our facilities, as well as getting you back home if needed. Here are the services we provide:
- Specialty Care Transport Unit (SCTU): Staffed with a nurse and a trained EMT, these units are designed for individuals needing advanced life support and specialized monitoring while transported between our facilities.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Ambulance: Whether transferred to another facility or discharged home, these vehicles are designed for non-emergency medical transportation.
- Mobility Assistance Vehicles (MAV): For individuals that use a wheelchair, these specialty vehicles are equipped to deliver added assistance.
Virtua Transfer Center
The Virtua Transfer Center and Medcom Medical Transport Dispatch Center are here to patients from point A to point B.
We'll help identify a hospital that can accommodate each person's needs. We'll coordinate between multiple facilities to ensure streamlined communication. And we'll arrange medical transport once every detail is confirmed.
Virtua colleagues, first responders, and local health systems can reach the Virtua Transfer Center by calling 856-886-5111 (x65111).
