Cardiac Imaging

Virtua’s advanced CT, PET, and other cardiac imaging systems provide an inside look at your heart and blood vessels.

CT Scanner

Being able to see the inner workings of your heart and blood vessels used to be the stuff of science fiction. Thanks to ever-improving technology, we can do just that—allowing our cardiovascular specialists to develop a treatment plan that’s best for you.

Our Approach to Cardiac Imaging

While a physical exam, discussion of your symptoms, and review of your medical history give our heart and vascular specialists a good idea about your condition, imaging tests play an important role in the diagnostic process.

Sophisticated tests—including positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), coronary CT angiography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—give a detailed look at the functioning of your cardiovascular system, even a single beat of your heart.

These tests allow our specialists to determine how well your heart is pumping, if you have narrowed or blocked arteries, the cause of irregular heart rhythms, and much more.

Together, you and your doctor will determine the most effective course of treatment to keep you, and your heart, going strong.

Cardiac Imaging Tests

Cardiac imaging tests we provide include:

  • PET/CT creates high-resolution, three-dimensional images of your heart
  • Coronary CT Angiography studies the health of your blood vessels
  • Cardiac MRI produces detailed images of your beating heart
  • Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring measures calcified plaque in your arteries
  • Echocardiogram uses ultrasound waves to looks at the heart’s function and structures
  • Chest X-ray reveals fluid in your lungs and around your heart (a possible sign of heart failure) and the condition of your heart, aorta, and pulmonary arteries and veins

Depending on your condition, these tests may avoid the need for a diagnostic catheterization, a procedure performed in the hospital in which a thin tube called a catheter is inserted into your arteries to look for narrowing or blockages.

The Virtua Difference for Cardiac Imaging

Virtua is the first health system in New Jersey to use the GE Omni Legend digital PET/CT and Revolution Apex platform—a system capable of capturing a single heartbeat—to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease.

Advanced technology, such as CT angiography with fractional flow reserve, which can determine if a specific area of plaque in a coronary artery is restricting blood flow and may need intervention to open it.
