Pediatric Diagnostic Imaging Tests Offered at Virtua

The CHOP at Virtua team includes radiologists, technologists, and nurses specially trained in pediatric imaging. And every imaging study is reviewed by a board-certified CHOP pediatric radiologist, with most results provided within 24 hours.

Low-dose imaging

Our state-of-the-art equipment produces the highest-quality images using the lowest radiation dose possible.

Pediatric sedation

Some imaging studies require your child to stay still for an extended time, and sedation is offered to reduce “wiggles” as needed.

Our experienced CHOP sedation team includes a physician, sedation nurse, and a child-life specialist, who work together to relax your child and make them comfortable for their study.

Family-centered care

Our center is designed to make families and children feel more comfortable, with equipment customized for kids and kid-friendly amenities, including videos, music, and more.

To make tests more comfortable for your child, a child-life specialist helps them relax with play therapy and distraction techniques. Our child-life specialist is skilled in helping kids complete imaging tests without sedation when appropriate.

Your child also can visit a mock MRI room to experience the sight and sound of an MRI before they have their test.

• X-ray: We offer advanced digital x-ray technology that produces fast, high-quality images for growth studies, scoliosis, or skeletal surveys.
• Ultrasound: High-tech ultrasound provides diagnostic images of soft tissues or structures, such as tendons, muscles, joints, and internal organs.
• CT (computed tomography) scan: Multi-detector CT scanner provides high-definition images with the lowest radiation dose possible. And it’s faster for a more comfortable experience.
• MRI (magnetic resonance imaging): Our open MRI scanner is one of the fastest, most powerful systems available. Your child can watch movies or listen to music during their MRI.
• Nuclear medicine: Nuclear medicine cameras can be combined with CT scans to provide a wider variety of imaging studies, offering greater detail and unique views by fusing the images.
• Fluoroscopy: Specialized radiologists conduct this imaging technique, which uses x-rays to view active body functions, such as colon, bone, or swallowing functions.
