What Causes Infertility?
Infertility is the inability to conceive after 12 months of trying (having consistent, unprotected intercourse). In women over age 35, it can mean the inability to get pregnant after six months of trying.
Reproductive challenges are driven equally by male or female factors, but NO ONE is to blame when they occur. Some factors are anatomical or due to age. Others are caused by reproductive disorders or conditions that prevent your body from working properly. Sometimes the cause is unknown.
In women, common causes include:
- Ovulation disorders (diminished ovarian reserve)
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Endometriosis
- Recurrent pregnancy loss
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Uterine scarring
- Uterine fibroids
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
In men, common causes include:
- Low sperm count
- Low sperm motility (movement)
- Absence of sperm production in the testicles
- Smoking tobacco or marijuana
- Alcohol abuse
- Environmental toxins like pesticides or lead
- Medical conditions like mumps or kidney disease
How Are Fertility Issues Diagnosed?
You should schedule a consultation with a reproductive endocrinologist if you’ve been trying to conceive for six to 12 months without getting pregnant.
Our reproductive endocrinologists are board-certified OB/GYNs with advanced education and training in diagnosing and treating reproductive disorders and infertility in women and men.
Making a diagnosis could include the following:
- Physical exams and medical histories for both partners
- Discussion of intercourse habits and timing
- For women, menstrual cycle history, body temperature and ovulation analysis, and imaging tests of the reproductive system
- For men, semen analysis and hormone-testing bloodwork
Depending on your evaluation and test results, your doctor may discuss fertility treatment options with you and your partner.
The good news is that there have been vast improvements in reproductive medicine in the last 30 years. And couples have access to more options and support than ever before.
