What Is Bioidentical Hormone Therapy?

Bioidentical hormones have the exact chemical structure of hormones you naturally produce in your body. When you have bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), your provider places customized hormone pellets under your skin that deliver an exact dose of the hormones you need. 

The rice-sized hormone pellets are a solid compound of estradiol and/or testosterone. They’re made from plant-based sources that have the same molecular structure of hormones in your body.

The pellets are inserted under the skin, releasing small amounts of hormones directly into your bloodstream to achieve levels similar to what your ovaries produced during your younger adult years.

If you decide to pursue this therapy, we’ll use your lab results to make customized hormone pellets that fit your unique body chemistry, age, and weight. Based on your hormone levels and symptoms, your customized pellets may contain either estradiol or testosterone, or both. If needed, you may be prescribed oral progesterone as well.

At your next visit, we’ll answer any additional questions and then insert your customized pellets under the skin in the hip area in a painless in-office procedure.

The pellets release small amounts of hormones directly into your bloodstream and are effective for 3 to 5 months in women and 4 to 6 months in men.
