Midwifery Birth and Wellness Center Early Discharge

The Early Discharge class is the last required class provided in the education series. On average, clients are discharged home within 4-6 hours after birth. This class prepares you for the care of the postpartum birthing person and the newborn. We teach you what is normal and what to watch out for in your recovery with priority in the perineum, bowel and bladder, nutritional support, and when to recognize something is not normal, and what to do if that occurs. The importance of physical and emotional rest is discussed and examples of how to achieve this are explored. We emphasize simple breastfeeding priorities and discuss safety rules for formula feeding. The proper safe sleeping recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics are discussed. For the new parents, we also talk about various ways of comforting your baby and the normal tendencies of a newborn crying. We will teach you the warning signs of your baby requiring help and what to do if that is evident. We finish off the class with what the visiting nurse will complete in the comfort of your own home 24-36 hours after the birth of your new baby complete with picture examples to ease any worries you may have. Questions may be asked throughout the class when a question arises. For parents of first babies we highly recommend signing up for the Baby Basics class. Learn more about our maternity classes.
