Midwifery Birth and Wellness Center Lactation

The Lactation class is one you are required to take if you have never breast/chest fed before, and you are wishing to do so. This class introduces and discusses the benefits of skin-to-skin in the first hours of birth and continued post-partum. The class will discuss the types of milk your body makes and when your body makes them. You are taught various positions from how to keep yourself comfortable, how to hold the baby in a correct position, and in-depth information regarding latch-on and how to achieve it properly. This is facilitated with a demonstration of props used by the instructor, along with multiple picture slides for various learners. We discuss hand expression, and the cues your baby will make when it is time to feed so you can recognize them early. You will also learn how long and how often to feed your baby which is one of the most asked questions regarding breastfeeding. You will understand how to assess if your baby is getting enough to eat, and what do to if you suspect they are not. Contact information is provided for various lactation consultants within the community including Virtua's ongoing Breastfeeding Support Group. There is also information regarding how your partner can assist you during this time. Questions may be asked throughout the class.
