U.S. News & World Report Recognizes Virtua Hospitals for Maternity Care
December 10, 2024 - Mother-Baby Units Also Earn Baby-Friendly Redesignation
Virtua Health’s three hospitals with maternity divisions are once again designated as “high performing” on U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 list of Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.
These high-performing hospitals—Virtua Mount Holly Hospital, Virtua Voorhees Hospital, and Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden—welcome almost 9,000 babies annually, the most of any South Jersey health system.
“Virtua is honored to be recognized for the fourth consecutive year,” said Dr. Nicole Lamborne, vice president of clinical operations for women’s and children’s services at Virtua. “Our goal is to help our patients have healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries and ensure they have the support they need after birth. This recognition is evidence of the expertise of our medical staff and the effective protocols in place to assure successful outcomes and exceptional birth experiences for parents and their newborns.”
The primary goal of Best Hospitals for Maternity Care is to help healthcare consumers, in consultation with their healthcare professionals, identify hospitals that provide high-quality maternity care for uncomplicated pregnancies and to provide them with information highly sought after by expecting parents.
U.S. News evaluates maternity hospitals on multiple measures, such as rates of C-sections, newborn complications, breast-milk feeding. Other criteria include frequency of routine vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC), episiotomy rates, whether a hospital meets new federal criteria for "birthing-friendly" practices, and whether a hospital tracked and reported their outcomes for patients of different races and ethnicities.
Baby-Friendly Recognition
Additionally, Virtua Mount Holly Hospital and Virtua Voorhees Hospital were recently redesignated as Baby-Friendly birth facilities by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. (BFUSA). This prestigious recognition signifies that Virtua has implemented BFUSA’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding initiative. The initiative helps mothers attain the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to initiate and continue breastfeeding successfully.
“Virtua recognizes the value of breastfeeding and its benefits to both mother and baby. Our maternity teams have been diligent in their efforts to support and empower mothers to breastfeed successfully,” said Pam Gallus, MSN, RN, NE-BC, assistant vice president of maternal child health at Virtua.
Improving Maternity Outcomes
Virtua has embraced innovative approaches to improve maternity outcomes, including implementing TeamBirth NJ, a communication model that enhances patients’ experience, increases safety, and supports health equity. Virtua Health is the first multi-site health system to fully implement TeamBirth in partnership with the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute.
Virtua Health also plans activities supporting Black Maternal Health Week in the spring, which brings attention to the alarming rate of maternal mortality for U.S. Black women – two to three times higher than for other races and ethnic groups.
