Virtua Health, one of the largest employers in Greater Philadelphia, has multiple employee affinity groups – called Colleague Communities – that reflect the interests and diversity of its 14,000-person workforce. One Colleague Community, WE Serve, is dedicated to advancing opportunities and awareness for military veterans in the region. Most of the members are veterans themselves. As a team, they created a Memorial Day display that is both touching and visually impactful.

“Although Memorial Day marks the start of summer and is a great opportunity to go to the beach or have a barbecue, we should also reserve time to remember the reason for the holiday – honoring those who sacrificed their lives in service to the United States,” said Katelynn Hewitt, pet therapy coordinator for Virtua Health and co-chair of the WE Serve group.

WE Serve placed 6,657 miniature flags in the landscape surrounding Virtua Voorhees Hospital, each one representing a New Jersey resident who died while serving the U.S. Armed Forces between World War I and the present day.
