All three Virtua facilities with maternity divisions earned places on the new U.S. News & World Report list.

Dec. 8, 2023 - Virtua Health’s three hospitals with maternity divisions earned the distinction of “high performing” on U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 list of Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.

These facilities – Virtua Mount Holly Hospital, Virtua Voorhees Hospital, and Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden – welcome 9,000 babies annually, the most of any South Jersey health system.

“This recognition by U.S. News affirms Virtua’s exceptional quality of care for parents and their newborns. At Virtua, we not only deliver the most babies, we’re also one of the best places to give birth,” said Dr. Nicole Lamborne, vice president of clinical operations for women’s services at Virtua.

U.S. News evaluates maternity hospitals on multiple measures, such as rates of C-sections, newborn complications, breast-milk feeding, and early elective deliveries. Other criteria include frequency of routine vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC), episiotomy rates, whether a hospital meets new federal criteria for "birthing-friendly" practices, and whether a hospital tracked and reported their outcomes for patients of different races and ethnicities.

Virtua hospitals earned high marks in these areas, and the organization continually works to improve maternity outcomes, Dr. Lamborne noted.

That includes embracing innovative approaches such as TeamBirth NJ, a communication model that enhances patients’ experience, increases safety, and supports health equity. Virtua launched TeamBirth at Virtua Voorhees Hospital and the adjacent Virtua Midwifery Birth & Wellness Center in 2022, followed by Virtua Mount Holly Hospital this year.

In addition, this spring Virtua led activities supporting Black Maternal Health Week, which brings attention to the alarming rate of maternal mortality for U.S. Black women – two to three times higher than for other races and ethnic groups.
