How Do I Know if I Have a Prostate Problem?

You may have a prostate problem if you have the following:

  • A frequent urge to urinate
  • A need to get up many times during the night to urinate
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Pain or burning urination
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, pelvic or rectal area, or upper thighs
  • Dribbling of urine

Screening for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer in American men. Screening for prostate cancer includes a digital rectal exam, which feels for lumps or suspicious areas on the prostate, and a blood test called a prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The American Cancer Society recommends prostate screening for men:

  • Age 50 who are at average risk and are expected to live at least 10 more years
  • Age 45 who are at high risk of developing prostate cancer. This includes African Americans and men who have a first-degree relative (father or brother) diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age (younger than age 65)
  • Age 40 who are at even higher risk of developing prostate cancer (those with more than one first-degree relative who had prostate cancer at an early age)

Find a Urologist

Board-certified urologists provide prostate care at locations throughout South Jersey. Cancer care, including radiation and proton therapy treatment, is offered through the Penn Medicine | Virtua Health Cancer Program.

Prostate Care and Cancer Treatments We Offer

Men diagnosed with prostate problems, including enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH) and prostate cancer, have access to a range of diagnostic procedures and advanced treatment options like robotic-assisted surgery and proton therapy at Virtua. Individualized treatment plans are based on your age, overall health, and other factors.

Our team of highly experienced cancer specialists offers the following:

  • Minimally invasive prostatectomy, including robotic-assisted surgery and cryosurgery
  • Radiation therapy is a noninvasive treatment that uses X-ray beams to precisely treat prostate cancer. It is provided in partnership with Penn Medicine at multiple Penn Medicine | Virtua Health Cancer Program locations in South Jersey.
  • Proton therapy is a type of radiation therapy that uses a controlled, high-energy proton beam to target a tumor. The beam’s pinpoint accuracy conforms to the specific shape and size of the prostate tumor, significantly reducing exposure to nearby healthy tissue. Proton therapy is provided at the Penn Medicine | Virtua Health Proton Therapy Center in Voorhees.
  • Hormone therapy, including luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists and LHRH antagonists, to block the use and production of male sex hormones (androgens)

Support during and after cancer is an important part of the recovery process. Virtua offers a professionally facilitated support group and education programs for prostate cancer survivors and their loved ones.

Advanced radiation therapy

Your provider may recommend a more precise form of radiation therapy called proton therapy to treat certain types of cancer. We use this advanced treatment for tumors located near highly sensitive areas or if surgery cannot completely remove a tumor. The Penn Medicine | Virtua Health Cancer Program offers South Jersey’s only proton therapy center.

Cancer clinical trials

We’re constantly working to improve treatments through clinical trials. When you participate in a trial, you may have access to a promising new therapy before it’s widely available. We lead studies on immunotherapy drugs that attack the cancer cells in your body. And we investigate medications that target specific genetic mutations associated with several cancers.
