Breast Cancer Care
Let our breast cancer team focus on you, so you can focus on getting better.
You don’t have to face breast cancer alone. The Penn Medicine | Virtua Health Cancer Program offers every available treatment option. We also have specialists focused solely on breast cancer — and the support you need to keep moving forward.
Our Approach to Breast Cancer Care
Having breast cancer is a very personal experience.
You want a breast cancer team that offers the most effective treatments available. But you also want to have a say in the treatment decisions that will impact your body.
At Virtua, you’ll have both.
We’ll partner with you to develop a care plan specific to your needs and preferences. Our team will:
- Educate you: We’ll discuss the different ways to treat your type of breast cancer. We’ll also explain what you can expect in the days, weeks, and months ahead.
- Care for you: We have all the treatment options you expect from a comprehensive breast cancer center. This includes lumpectomy procedures that won’t leave you with a visible scar, and breast reconstruction after mastectomy. We also offer advanced radiation therapy, such as proton therapy, immunotherapy and access to clinical trials.
- Support you: We offer support services to help you manage the emotional and physical side effects of treatment. You can connect with a social worker or join a support group. You can get help managing fatigue or get wigs or scarves to cope with hair loss. You also have access to genetic testing, lymphedema therapy and nutritional counseling.
Prompt, personalized care
Once you’re diagnosed, we aim to get you in with a breast cancer specialist within two business days. You can schedule your initial visit by calling 844-896-6367.
We’ll also connect you with a breast cancer nurse navigator. Your navigator will be your point person for everything from questions and treatment concerns to appointments with specialists.

Consensus-driven care
With breast cancer, you may need more than one treatment from more than one specialist. At Virtua, all of our breast cancer specialists meet weekly to discuss care plans. This collaboration includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, breast surgeons, pathologists, social workers, and research coordinators. Together, we plan treatments for patients with rare or complex types of breast cancer.

National accreditation
Our breast center is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Accredited centers like Virtua’s offer breast cancer clinical trials, nurse navigation, genetic testing and counseling, and survivorship services. The accreditation also demonstrates that Virtua meets specific safety measures for breast biopsies and breast surgery. All of this means you can have complete confidence in the care you’re receiving.

Sophisticated surgery options
Our breast surgeons offer breast-conserving procedures (such as lumpectomy) that leave much of your breast intact. We also offer all types of mastectomies, including nipple-sparing techniques. Our breast surgeons are trained in oncoplastic closures, meaning you won’t have a large scar. And if you choose to have breast reconstruction, we offer both DIEP flap and implant procedures. We’ll begin your reconstruction at the same time we remove your tumor to reduce the need for a separate procedure.

Genetic testing and counseling
Mutations in certain genes, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, increase your risk of breast cancer. If you have one of these abnormal genes, you may benefit from targeted therapies. Our genetic counselors will guide you through genetic testing and explain how your results affect your cancer risk and treatment options.
