What conditions are often treated in a pediatric emergency room?
While some illnesses or injuries can be treated by your pediatrician or in an urgent care center, sometimes your child’s care can’t wait – especially if it’s after hours.
These are the most common conditions we treat in our pediatric emergency room:
- Difficulty breathing, including severe allergic reactions or asthma attacks
- Fever over 100.4 in children age 2 months or younger
- Fever, plus a stiff neck or severe headache
- Loss of consciousness
- Swallowed a foreign object or button battery
- Poisoning
- Mental illness with suicidal thoughts or self-harm
- Substance use or overdose
- Broken bones
- Sports injuries (strains, sprains)
- Earaches
- Eye injuries or infections
- Head injuries
- Lacerations (larger cuts)
- Burns
- Severe dehydration
- Severe diarrhea or vomiting (unable to keep down fluids)
- Significant behavioral change, including unexplained sleepiness or lack of interaction with surroundings
- Seizures
- Severe or sudden stomach pain
- Skin infections
- Severe headache, especially with light sensitivity, vomiting, or a change in behavior
- Respiratory illness (severe cough or sore throat)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

While all Virtua hospitals provide emergency care for kids, our pediatric emergency rooms at Virtua Mount Holly and Virtua Voorhees Hospitals provide a child-friendly experience. This includes:
- Separate entrance and family-friendly waiting area
- Doctors, nurses, and technologists who specialize in treating children
- Child-life specialists to provide play therapy and distraction techniques to help children cope with pain, stress, or difficult procedures
- 24/7 pediatric diagnostic imaging, with all imaging studies read by CHOP pediatric radiologists
- Pediatric sedation for some procedures, provided by a doctor and sedation nurse
- Phlebotomists who specialize in drawing blood from kids
- Referral and coordination of pediatric specialty care, with access to specialists at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and transfer, if needed
- Admittance to inpatient pediatric unit when more complex care is needed
- Follow-up after discharge with family physician and/or pediatrician
