Augmented-Reality Surgery Has Bobby Back on Stage, Rocking His New Hip

Bobby Jones wanted hip surgery that would get him back to performing in as little time as possible. Thanks to an advanced procedure at Virtua, he was thrilling audiences again in only a few weeks.

A singer and guitarist, Bobby Jones has been entertaining crowds around Delaware County, Pennsylvania for more than 20 years. When a doctor told him he had arthritis and needed hip surgery, Bobby began researching approaches that would relieve his pain and get him back to playing gigs as quickly as possible.

“A friend in California had a type of hip surgery called SuperPath®, where they don’t cut your muscles and tendons,” said Bobby. “He said it would take research to find a person to do the surgery, but it’s going to be worth it to you. It was a gift for me to find Dr. Klingenstein at Virtua.”

The technique is just one type of advanced minimally invasive surgery performed by the specialists at Virtua Orthopedics & Spine.

‘Like X-Ray Vision’
Bobby’s surgery afforded the ability to make a smaller incision and preserve ligaments around the hip and other soft tissues. Greg Klingenstein, MD, who specializes in hip preservation and hip and knee replacement surgeries, also took advantage of another technology to ensure the 70-year-old could return to the life he enjoys.

Dr. Klingenstein is among the few surgeons in the region using the HipInsight™ augmented reality (AR) system. Wearing Microsoft HoloLens 2 glasses, Dr. Klingenstein overlays 3D holograms of the patient’s anatomy onto and inside their hip to ensure real-time, accurate implant placement and positioning.

“Augmented reality is a revolutionary technology where I can literally see the bones through the skin, like X-ray vision,” said Dr. Klingenstein. “The hologram functions as a template, so I know where to put the components. When the hologram overlaps my implants, I know they are exactly right.”

Dr. Klingenstein has been performing hip replacements based on CT scans since 2013 and believes AR takes the technology to the next level.

“During a traditional hip replacement, the patient’s pelvic scans and surgical plan are displayed on a monitor, so you have to look back and forth between the patient and the monitor to place and align the implant,” said Dr. Klingenstein. “With the headset, you see the patient’s scans and customized surgical plan in the same field of vision as their body.”

Bobby’s Groovin’ Again
Bobby was able to return home only a few hours after his Nov. 29, 2023 surgery and was back on stage four weeks later for performances on New Year’s Eve.

“I had the hip replacement of the future,” said Bobby. “It’s just an amazing thing. It was like getting my tonsils out.”

He continues to thrill audiences, singing everything from Bruno Mars to Andrea Bocelli, solo or with his 10-piece wedding band.

“What I do is make people happy. For me to continue that and have a vibrant, healthy life, I wanted to have the best care,” he said. “Dr. Klingenstein is amazing. I’m a 100% fan of his.”
